Windows and Doors

So as we await for planning consent and quotes from builders, we thought it was good to use the time to start looking at the style of windows we would want installed. The intention is to replace all the single glazed windows with double glazing at some point but this will depend on the cost. The existing windows of the house are single glazed timber sliding sash, with Georgian bars in the upper half.

The rear windows are simple sliding sash with the ones on the ground floor having Georgian bars.

The extension will consist of 2 windows in the kitchen area, followed by another in the utility area. Then there is a small window for the small toilet and 2 windows above the garage (front and rear). There is also a single door from the utility into the garden and 2 sets of bi-folding doors.
In total then we have over 30 windows.

We would like to replace the existing windows with something similar that keeps the character of the property but sliding sash windows are very expensive even in uPVC compared to ordinary uPVC casement windows. Then there are the new windows for the extension. Do these need to be sash too or should we go for something modern? Furthermore, do we use windows that are consistent with the bi-folding doors in the extension?

Below are some examples of window styles we've been looking at.

Aluminium
The aluminium clad timber windows are absolutely stunning. They offer the beauty of wood on the inside with minimal maintenance on the outside due to the aluminium cladding. They are premium windows that are made in Germany and imported by a local company. This company doesn't even sell uPVC windows. I've asked for a quote but I'm sure these will be beyond our budget.

In addition to the windows there are also the bi-folding doors that need to be considered.

With the bi-folding doors, having an odd number of panes/leaves allows for a traffic door and given we have one opening of 3m and another of 4 - 4.5m we can have a 3 pane door and either a 4 or 5 pane door. The bi-fold doors also have an option of having integral blinds which look really good and will provide some privacy and shade but costs a lot of extra money.

So lots of decisions to be made.

Comments

  1. Aluminum clad windows are beautiful. Yes they will be costly but another thing to consider is, if you see your self living there for long term then may not be a bad investment.
